We fall into a ‘functional atheism,’ a mode of operation that acts- whatever we may say we believe- as if there is no power in the world besides our own. We act as though we believe that God, if he happens to share our priorities and concerns, will be caught by surprise and come up short if we cease or slow our activity.”
