September 21, 2015:

Pope Francis plans to name Father Junipero Serra saint

By Ama Daetz Friday, September 04, 2015
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) –

COMMENT: The treatment of Native Americans was the result of the “Doctrine of Discovery” issued in the year 1493 by the Papacy. This Papal Bull claimed that all land arrived in by catholic explorers and missionaries were “Discovered” and therefore owned by the church.

Many people will be watching the pope closely, including experts on Junipero Serra, the Franciscan priest responsible for building the missions in California. Pope Francis will name him a saint during his visit to Washington.

Father Junipero Serra was one of California's first immigrants. Serra expert and Santa Clara University professor Robert Senkewicz said, "Junipero Serra came to California with the idea of trying to convert the native people to Christianity."
But making Serra a saint is not without controversy and some Native Americans are asking the pope to reconsider. They blame Serra for bringing diseases that killed more than 150,000 Native Americans. Those who survived were forced into the missions, tortured and beaten if they didn't follow Serra's orders.

"They believed we were filled with demons, and they basically believed the demons had to be beaten out of us," Valentin Lopez, Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, said.

Pope Francis, however, appears be trying to make amends. He will hold high-profile meetings with Latinos and immigrants in each of the three cities he is visiting on his U.S. tour.

Pope Francis's thorniest point in his U.S. agenda: Making Junipero Serra a saint

By Marcia Facundo

Published September 17, 2015 Fox News Latino

COMMENT: Notice the methods of conversion used by these so-called missionaries.

Louise J. Miranda Ramirez, an Ohlone Indian, will be at the grounds of the Carmel Mission in Monterrey, California on the day that Pope Francis canonizes Spanish missionary Junipero Serra in Washington D.C.

On Sept. 23, Miranda Ramirez and others will pay a visit to the historic mission that holds Serra's remains to invoke her ancestors and “let them know we did everything we could" to stop him from being canonized.

“He was not the saint they talk about,” said Miranda Ramirez, who is tribal chairwoman of the Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen nation.

In spite of the controversy sparked by the canonization, Serra, who died at age 70 in 1784, will become America’s first Hispanic saint next week in the largest Catholic church in the Americas, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

But Miranda Ramirez says that the Franciscan missionary did exactly the opposite.

“As the president of the missions, Serra had the authority to stop the destruction of our people and stop any of the Spanish soldiers from raping our women and our children,” she told Fox News Latino.

Romero Institute Calls for Pope Francis to Revoke the Doctrine of Discovery

By via The Romero Institute
Monday Jun 22nd, 2015 12:16 PM

COMMENT: This “Doctrine of Discovery” is still in effect today. there are those who are still calling for the revocation of this horrible justification for theft, rape and murder.

The Doctrine of Discovery was announced by Pope Alexander IV in 1493 as part of the Papal Bull. It characterized indigenous people as subhuman savages and set forth the policy that Christian nations in Europe had a divine right to possess the land and natural resources of the “savages.”
“The Doctrine of Discovery is the moral rationale for the genocide that European powers inflict on Native populations in the United States and throughout the world,” said Chase Iron Eyes, a Romero Institute board member. “This deplorable doctrine must be revoked if the crimes against our Native people — and our planet — are to be effectively addressed.”

A revocation of the Doctrine of Discovery would not only signify to the indigenous people of the world, who are currently on the front lines of the environmental movement, that the Catholic Church is on the side of the poor and oppressed. It will further demonstrate that Francis recognizes the Papacy provided moral justification for the theft of indigenous land and the slaughter of millions of indigenous people.

The Doctrine of Discovery was inserted into United States property law by the U.S. Supreme Court in the case Johnson v McIntosh. Chief Justice John Marshall, who wrote the unanimous opinion for the court, asserted that American Indians had forfeited “their rights to complete sovereignty, as independent nations” and only retained rights to occupy a small portion of their lands.

California wildfires destroy at least 1,400 homes

John Bacon, USA TODAY 1:21 p.m. EDT

September 20, 2015

Two deadly fires roaring through Northern California have destroyed more than 1,400 homes and threaten thousands more, state fire officials said Sunday.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said at least 888 homes have burned in the Valley Fire, 130 miles north of San Francisco, that already has been blamed in three deaths. The Butte Fire in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas has destroyed 535 residences, CalFire said. The fire has been blamed for two deaths.

Both fires have also burned hundreds of barns, garages and other structures.

There have been some gains. The Valley fire was 53% contained Sunday; the Butte fire was 70% contained.

More than a dozen fires are raging across the drought-stricken state, displacing more than 20,000 residents. More than 10,000 firefighters are battling the blazes.

Ben Carson says no Muslim should ever become US president

Martin Pengelly in New York

Sunday 20 September 2015

Perhaps Mr. Carson has overlooked this piece of the United States Constitution? How ironic as we look to the future!!

Article Six of the United States Constitution

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

The Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has said no Muslim should be president of the United States of America.

In an interview with NBC for broadcast on Sunday morning, the retired neurosurgeon said: “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”

Carson’s discussion with Meet the Press host Chuck Todd centered around controversy that arose this week when Donald Trump – the real-estate mogul keeping Carson in second place in the polls – failed to correct an audience member at a New Hampshire campaign rally who said President Obama was a Muslim.

Carson, a Christian, is a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In October, he will publish a new book, written with his wife Candy Carson and entitled A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties.

In publicity material issued by Penguin Random House, Carson is quoted as saying: “I believe that making a difference starts with understanding our amazing founding document, the US Constitution.
